Deadly Shooting at Islamic Center of San Diego Shocks Nation

A tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego has left three people dead and shaken communities across the United States. Authorities say two teenage gunmen opened fire outside the mosque on Monday morning before later dying from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds nearby. Police are now investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.
What Happened in San Diego?
According to the San Diego Police Department, officers responded to reports of an active shooter around 11:40 a.m. local time near the mosque in the Clairemont area. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as worshippers and schoolchildren inside the Islamic center rushed for safety.
Police confirmed that three adult men were killed in the shooting, including a security guard who reportedly acted heroically to protect others during the attack. The two suspects, believed to be teenagers aged 17 and 18, were later found dead several blocks away.
Children Forced Into Lockdown
The mosque complex also houses a school, and several children were inside during the shooting. Teachers quickly locked classrooms and hid students while gunfire erupted outside. One nine-year-old student later described hiding in a closet until SWAT officers arrived. Thankfully, authorities confirmed that no children were physically harmed.
Police Investigating Possible Hate Motive
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said investigators are treating the case as a hate crime “until it’s not.” Authorities reportedly found evidence of anti-Muslim rhetoric connected to the suspects.
Earlier that same morning, police had already been searching for one of the suspects after his mother reported that weapons and a vehicle were missing and feared her son was suicidal. Officers were attempting to locate the teens when the mosque attack occurred.
Community Mourning Victims
The attack has devastated San Diego’s Muslim community, especially because it happened during one of the holiest periods in the Islamic calendar. Community members gathered nearby in grief, with many praising the slain security guard for helping prevent an even larger tragedy.
Officials including Gavin Newsom and local leaders condemned the violence and expressed support for affected families. Security around mosques in several U.S. cities was also increased following the shooting.
Growing Concerns Over Hate-Fueled Violence
The San Diego mosque shooting has reignited concerns about rising hate crimes and violence targeting religious communities in America. Civil rights groups are calling for stronger protections for places of worship and increased action against extremist rhetoric online.
Investigators from the FBI and local law enforcement continue to gather evidence as the nation watches for answers behind one of the deadliest attacks on a Muslim community center in recent years.
