Kerala CM Announcement 2026: VD Satheesan Named New Chief Minister

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has officially announced V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, ending nearly 10 days of political suspense following the 2026 Assembly election results.

The announcement was made on Thursday by senior Congress observers after several rounds of discussions in New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram. The decision came after intense lobbying within the party and consultations involving senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and K. C. Venugopal.

The Congress-led UDF secured a massive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections by winning 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, bringing an end to a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule under Pinarayi Vijayan.

Who is VD Satheesan?

V. D. Satheesan is a senior Congress leader and a six-time MLA from the Paravur constituency in Ernakulam district. He previously served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and played a major role in rebuilding the Congress organisation in the state after previous election defeats.

Known for his grassroots political approach and aggressive opposition campaigns against the ruling LDF government, Satheesan emerged as the preferred choice among party workers and UDF allies. Other major contenders for the top post included Ramesh Chennithala and K. C. Venugopal.

Political Drama Before the Announcement

The delay in announcing Kerala’s Chief Minister triggered political debates across the state. Supporters of different Congress factions held protests and social media campaigns backing their preferred candidates. Even alliance partners such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) reportedly expressed support for Satheesan.

Congress leaders finally reached a consensus after high-level meetings held in Delhi over the last two days. Following the announcement, celebrations erupted at Congress offices across Kerala, with party workers distributing sweets and waving UDF flags.

Satheesan’s First Reaction

After being named Chief Minister-designate, Satheesan thanked the Congress leadership and party workers for their support. He said the position was “not a personal achievement but a collective responsibility” and promised to work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Kerala.

The Congress Legislature Party is expected to formally elect Satheesan as its leader before the swearing-in ceremony. Discussions regarding cabinet formation and ministerial allocations among UDF allies are also underway. Political observers believe the new government will focus on economic recovery, employment generation, welfare programs, and infrastructure development after the decisive mandate received in the elections.
