Orange County State of Emergency Declared After Dangerous Chemical Tank Emergency in California

California officials have declared a major state of emergency in Orange County after a dangerous chemical incident at an aerospace manufacturing facility in Garden Grove triggered mass evacuations and fears of a catastrophic explosion. The emergency has quickly become one of the most serious industrial safety crises in Southern California in recent years.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the emergency declaration late Friday as firefighters, hazmat specialists, and national chemical experts worked around the clock to stabilize an overheated industrial tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly flammable chemical used in aerospace and plastics manufacturing.

The incident began at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove when emergency crews discovered a massive storage tank rapidly heating and venting hazardous vapors. Officials warned the tank could either rupture and release thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals or explode with devastating force.

Authorities say between 5,000 and 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate remain inside the unstable tank. Firefighters have been spraying water continuously onto the structure in an attempt to cool it, while drones monitor temperature changes from above. Despite those efforts, officials admitted temperatures inside the tank continued to rise throughout the emergency response.

More than 40,000 residents across several Orange County communities were ordered to evacuate immediately, including parts of Anaheim, Westminster, Stanton, Buena Park, Cypress, and Garden Grove itself. Emergency shelters were opened at local schools and civic centers as families rushed to leave the danger zone ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

The Orange County Fire Authority described the situation as “unprecedented,” with responders warning that a worst-case explosion could damage nearby industrial facilities and spread toxic contamination into surrounding neighborhoods and waterways.

Health officials also warned residents about the dangers of exposure to MMA vapors. According to emergency guidance, inhalation of the chemical can lead to severe respiratory irritation, dizziness, nausea, and neurological complications. Authorities emphasized that while widespread toxic exposure had not yet been detected, evacuation orders were issued out of caution due to the unpredictable nature of the tank failure.

Governor Newsom stated that California is deploying every available state resource to prevent disaster and support affected communities. The emergency declaration allows state agencies to move equipment, open additional shelters, and accelerate hazardous-material response operations.

Experts from across the United States have reportedly joined the response effort to search for alternative solutions capable of stabilizing the chemical reaction inside the tank. Engineers are also preparing containment barriers around storm drains and nearby infrastructure in case a spill occurs.

The unfolding emergency has drawn comparisons to previous industrial disasters in the United States, with officials stressing that preventing a full-scale explosion remains the top priority. Residents have been urged to stay away from evacuation zones and follow official emergency alerts until authorities declare the area safe.
