HBO’s House of the Dragon returns with an even larger ensemble cast as the brutal Dance of the Dragons enters its bloodiest stage. Following the explosive events of Season 2, alliances are shifting, dragons are taking to the skies, and both Team Black and Team Green are preparing for an all-out war that will determine the future of House Targaryen.
Season 3 introduces several important new characters while bringing back nearly every surviving major player from previous seasons. With political betrayals, devastating battles, and emotional family conflicts at the heart of the story, the cast remains one of the strongest elements of the acclaimed fantasy drama.
Emma D’Arcy returns as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, whose claim to the Iron Throne drives the central conflict of the series. After suffering devastating personal losses, Rhaenyra enters Season 3 determined to reclaim power and secure the future of her children.
Her character evolves from a reluctant ruler into a hardened queen forced to make impossible decisions during wartime. Recent episodes show her embracing a more decisive—and sometimes ruthless—style of leadership.
Matt Smith reprises his role as Prince Daemon Targaryen, one of Westeros’ most dangerous warriors and dragon riders. Daemon remains both Rhaenyra’s greatest military asset and one of her most unpredictable allies. His experience in warfare and political strategy continues to shape Team Black’s campaign.
Season 3 explores Alicent’s struggle to protect her surviving family while watching the kingdom descend further into civil war. Her relationship with Rhaenyra becomes even more tragic as former friendship gives way to irreversible conflict. Although physically weakened after previous battles, Aegon remains determined to defend his claim to the Iron Throne and rally Team Green.
Ewan Mitchell returns as Prince Aemond, one of the most feared dragon riders in Westeros. His enormous dragon, Vhagar, remains a decisive military advantage, while his growing relationship with Alys Rivers adds another intriguing storyline to Season 3. Her mysterious prophetic visions become increasingly significant as the war intensifies.
Harry Collett returns as Prince Jacaerys “Jace” Velaryon. His leadership and diplomatic efforts remain essential for Team Black, although his storyline takes dramatic turns that have already generated widespread discussion among fans.
Season 3 also welcomes back many familiar faces, including: Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria Matthew Needham as Larys Strong Bethany Antonia as Baela Targaryen
Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena Targaryen Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers Freddie Fox as Gwayne Hightower Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull Kieran Bew as Hugh Hammer Tom Bennett as Ulf White Jefferson Hall as Jason and Tyland Lannister Kurt Egyiawan as Grand Maester Orwyle
As commander of the Hightower armies, Ormund leads one of the largest military forces supporting Team Green.
Known to fans as “Roddy the Ruin,” Tommy Flanagan portrays the fierce Northern warrior leading the Winter Wolves into battle.
Dan Fogler joins the series as Ser Torrhen Manderly, another important northern noble supporting Rhaenyra’s cause.
Tom Cullen portrays Ser Luthor Largent, commander of King’s Landing’s City Watch and an important ally of Daemon Targaryen.
Jon Roxton arrives carrying the legendary Valyrian steel sword “Orphan-Maker,” making him one of the most dangerous knights entering the conflict.
Barry Sloane joins the cast as Ser Adrian Redfort, another experienced knight supporting Team Black.
Annie Shapero portrays Alysanne “Black Aly” Blackwood, one of the most memorable female warriors introduced in the later stages of the Dance of the Dragons.
Unlike previous seasons, Season 3 dramatically expands the number of important characters. The story now spans nearly every major region of Westeros, including: King’s Landing Dragonstone Harrenhal The Reach The Riverlands The North
Each location introduces new political leaders, military commanders, and dragon riders, making the cast larger than ever before. Showrunner Ryan Condal has explained that the series now features numerous point-of-view characters to better capture the scale of the Targaryen civil war.
