Sony FX5 Launch: 5K Open Gate, Internal RAW, AI Autofocus & More
Sony FX5 is Sony’s latest full-frame cinema camera featuring 5K Open Gate, 4K 120fps, AI autofocus, RAW recording, and professional filmmaking tools.
Sony has officially introduced the FX5, the latest addition to its acclaimed Cinema Line series, marking one of the company’s most significant video-focused releases in recent years. Designed for independent filmmakers, documentary creators, commercial production teams, and high-end content creators, the FX5 brings advanced imaging technology, internal RAW recording, and professional cinema features into a compact full-frame body.
The announcement has generated considerable attention across the filmmaking industry, with many professionals viewing the FX5 as a bridge between the popular FX3 and the more advanced FX6. Sony says the camera is built around a newly developed stacked full-frame sensor and is optimized for both solo creators and larger production environments.
At the heart of the FX5 is a 16.6-megapixel full-frame stacked CMOS sensor. Stacked sensor technology allows faster readout speeds, helping reduce rolling shutter artifacts and improving performance during high-frame-rate recording.
Sony claims the camera delivers more than 15 stops of dynamic range, enabling filmmakers to retain detail in both highlights and shadows. This makes the FX5 particularly attractive for cinematic productions, documentary shooting in uncontrolled lighting conditions, and commercial projects that require extensive color grading in post-production.

Sony is also offering an optional detachable XLR handle that supports 32-bit float audio recording, a format that provides greater headroom and reduces the risk of clipped audio during unpredictable recording situations. This makes the camera particularly useful for run-and-gun productions where separate audio recorders may not be practical.
Professional productions often require redundant recording, and Sony addresses this with dual CFexpress Type A / SD card slots. Users can choose simultaneous backup recording, relay recording, or separate file formats for different workflows. The camera features a 3.5-inch multi-angle touchscreen, and Sony is also offering an optional OLED electronic viewfinder for operators who prefer a more traditional cinema shooting experience.
Sony has not yet confirmed the final retail price for India, but industry estimates suggest the FX5 could launch in the range of ₹3.5 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh, depending on the included accessories and import duties. Availability is expected to begin later in 2026 through Sony authorized dealers and major camera retailers.
