Union Minister of State George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers following the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure. The resignation comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not nominate him for another term in the recent Rajya Sabha elections, effectively ending his eligibility to continue in the ministerial role.
President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation, marking the conclusion of Kurian’s tenure as Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. His departure is viewed as part of a broader political transition ahead of potential cabinet adjustments and organizational changes within the ruling party.
George Kurian has long been recognized as one of the BJP’s prominent leaders from Kerala. A lawyer by profession, he has served the party in several organizational roles over the years and was considered an important representative for outreach among minority communities. He also previously served as Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities before entering the Union Cabinet.
His appointment as a Union Minister in June 2024 was seen as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its presence in Kerala and expand engagement with Christian communities in the state.
The resignation is not linked to any controversy or disciplinary action. Instead, it stems from parliamentary requirements. Kurian had entered the Rajya Sabha through a by-election from Madhya Pradesh in 2024, filling a seat vacated by another BJP leader. That term was scheduled to conclude in 2026. With the party selecting other candidates for the latest Rajya Sabha elections, his parliamentary tenure reached its end, making his resignation from the ministerial post necessary.
