UK Radio Station Apologises After False Announcement of King Charles III’s Death

A British radio station has issued a public apology after mistakenly announcing the death of King Charles III during a live broadcast, causing confusion and concern among listeners across the United Kingdom.

The incident involved the historic broadcaster Radio Caroline, which accidentally triggered an emergency “Death of a Monarch” protocol because of a technical malfunction. The false announcement aired on May 19, 2026, before the station briefly went silent  a standard broadcasting procedure prepared for the death of a reigning monarch.

What Happened?

According to the station, a computer error at its main studio in Maldon, Essex, accidentally activated the emergency sequence used by UK broadcasters in the event of a royal death. The announcement incorrectly claimed that King Charles III had passed away, leading to immediate confusion among listeners and social media users.

Following the false broadcast, regular programming was interrupted and the station went off-air temporarily. Staff quickly realized the mistake and restored normal service soon afterward.

Official Apology From Radio Caroline

Station manager Peter Moore publicly apologized to both the king and the station’s audience. He explained that the technical issue unintentionally triggered procedures that all British radio stations keep prepared for national emergencies involving the monarchy.

In a statement, the station said it deeply regretted “any distress caused” by the accidental announcement. The broadcaster also confirmed that internal systems are being reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Why the Incident Drew Major Attention

The United Kingdom has detailed media plans prepared for the death of a monarch. These protocols became widely known after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, when broadcasters followed carefully organized reporting procedures.

Because of these established systems, the mistaken announcement quickly spread online and sparked speculation before being corrected. Many listeners initially believed the report was genuine because the station reportedly played ceremonial programming associated with royal announcements.

King Charles Continues Public Duties

At the time of the accidental broadcast, King Charles III was reportedly carrying out public engagements in Northern Ireland alongside Queen Camilla. There has been no indication from Buckingham Palace of any health emergency connected to the monarch.

The incident also renewed public discussion about the king’s health, especially after his previously disclosed cancer treatment, although officials have continued to state that he remains active in royal duties. Radio Caroline apologised after mistakenly announcing the death of King Charles III due to a computer error that triggered emergency royal broadcast protocols.
