Tragedy at Sea: Indian Sailor Dies After Cargo Dhow Catches Fire Near Hormuz

A tragic maritime accident near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz has claimed the life of an Indian sailor after a wooden cargo dhow caught fire and capsized during its journey. The incident occurred amid rising tensions and growing security concerns in the Gulf region, where commercial shipping routes remain under close international watch.
According to official sources, the dhow was carrying 18 Indian crew members and general cargo when the fire broke out on Friday. While 17 crew members were rescued safely, one sailor lost his life and four others suffered burn injuries. The injured sailors are currently receiving treatment in Dubai and are said to be in stable condition.
The deceased sailor has been identified as Altaf Talab Ker, an engine driver from Gujarat’s Dwarka district. Reports stated that another passing vessel rescued the surviving crew members before they were transported to Dubai Port for medical assistance and further support.
Officials from the Indian Consulate in Dubai have met the rescued sailors and are coordinating with the dhow owner to provide all possible assistance to the affected crew and their families. The Consulate also expressed condolences over the tragic death and assured that emergency support is being provided on priority.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, the incident comes at a time when maritime security in the Gulf has become increasingly fragile due to the ongoing Iran-US conflict and military activity around the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping experts have warned that escalating regional tensions have significantly increased risks for cargo vessels and commercial sailors operating in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important oil and trade corridors, handling a major share of global energy shipments. In recent months, several merchant ships and tankers have reported attacks, fires, and navigation disruptions linked to the regional conflict, raising concerns for international shipping companies and governments alike.
India has also increased monitoring of Indian-flagged vessels and seafarers operating in Gulf waters as the security situation continues to evolve. Maritime authorities remain on alert to ensure the safety of Indian sailors working across international shipping routes.
