The incident came to light when a fire broke out in Justice Verma‘s Delhi bungalow over the Holi weekend. Firefighters who arrived to
douse the fire found a huge stash of cash in one of the rooms. Justice Verma was out of town at the time and his family informed the fire brigade and the police.

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, upon learning of the incident, convened an urgent meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium. The Collegium unanimously decided to transfer Justice Varma to his parent court, the

Justice Varma began his judicial career as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in October 2014 and became a permanent judge in February 2016. He was appointed to the Delhi High Court in October 2021.
