Superstar Rajinikanth has once again proved why he is called the Thalaivar of Indian cinema. His much-awaited film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stormed into theatres on August 14, 2025, delivering a historic opening day collection that has set the box office buzzing. According to early estimates, Coolie minted a staggering ₹65 crore nett across all languages in India on its first day. This is Rajinikanth’s biggest-ever opening and among the top openings in Indian cinema history.

The Tamil and Telugu belts were the main drivers of the film’s success, with occupancy rates soaring above 85% and several shows running to capacity.

Tamil Shows: 86.99% average occupancy

Telugu Shows: 92.10% average occupancy

Hindi Shows: 35.66% average occupancy

The night shows in Tamil Nadu recorded over 94% occupancy, showcasing the frenzy around Rajinikanth’s collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Worldwide Collection

Globally, Coolie is estimated to have earned between ₹125–150 crore gross on its opening day. Some trade analysts, including Ramesh Bala, peg the number even higher, at around ₹170 crore worldwide gross. This makes Coolie one of the biggest global openers of all time for an Indian film.

Clash with War 2

The film released alongside War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. While War 2 also had an impressive start with around ₹52.5 crore in India, Coolie clearly outshone its competition in most markets, particularly in South India
