Bihar is witnessing a major transformation in its power sector, with the state government announcing several new initiatives aimed at providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to its citizens. From free power schemes to solar energy projects, the state’s electricity landscape is changing rapidly, bringing hope to millions of households and industries alike.
Free Electricity for Households
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a new welfare measure offering up to 125 units of electricity free per month to domestic consumers. This scheme, which takes effect from August 2025, will benefit nearly 1.67 crore households across the state.
The move aims to ease the financial burden on middle and lower-income families, while also encouraging efficient energy usage. It’s being seen as both a development measure and a major pre-election promise ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections 2025.

₹12,000 Crore Power Infrastructure Plan
To meet Bihar’s growing energy demand, the government has finalized a massive ₹12,869 crore power transmission expansion plan.
The project focuses on improving power infrastructure, expanding grid capacity, and ensuring stable electricity supply even in rural regions. By 2035, Bihar’s peak power demand is expected to reach 18,700 MW, and this investment will ensure the grid is prepared for the future.
This plan will include:
- New high-capacity transmission lines
- Upgradation of existing infrastructure
- Enhanced substation capacity across districts
- Reduced power cuts and improved voltage stability
68 New Substations for North Bihar
In a move to strengthen regional energy distribution, the North Bihar Power Distribution Company (NBPDCL) has announced 68 new power substations
These substations will help manage the increasing power load, improve supply reliability, and cater to rural electrification goals. The project will particularly benefit districts like Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, and Madhubani, where power fluctuations have long been an issue.

Solar Energy Takes Center Stage
Bihar is also investing heavily in renewable energy. Recently, CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated a 2 MW canal-bank solar project in Bikram (Patna district). The solar power will be supplied at an affordable rate of ₹3.10 per unit under a long-term agreement.
This project marks the beginning of Bihar’s push towards green and clean energy, with plans to build more canal-top and rooftop solar installations in the coming years. The government aims to make renewable energy a key contributor to Bihar’s power supply mix
Faster Electricity Connection Process
To improve public service delivery, the Bihar Electricity Department is introducing a digital application system that allows consumers to apply for new electricity connections online.
With this system, applicants can expect new connections within 7 to 15 days, reducing bureaucratic delays and improving transparency
A Brighter Future for Bihar
Bihar’s electricity reforms are not just about supply — they’re about empowerment. Reliable electricity will drive small businesses, agricultural activities, and educational facilities, fostering inclusive growth across the state.
With the combined push for free power, stronger infrastructure, and solar innovation, Bihar is on its way to becoming a model for sustainable development in India’s eastern region
