Satya Pal Malik passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 79, following a prolonged illness. He died around 1 pm at Delhi’s Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital His hospitalization since mid-May was due to complications from a severe urinary tract infection, which led to kidney failure and multi-organ dysfunction
Political Journey
Born on 24 July 1946, Malik began his political career in the mid-1960s inspired by socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia. He was first elected as an MLA from Baghpat in 1974. He later served in the Rajya Sabha (1980–84, 1986–89) and the Lok Sabha (Aligarh, 1989–91)
He held roles in several political parties including Lok Dal, Congress, Janata Dal, and joined the BJP in 2004. He rose to national party responsibilities such as vice-presidency and agricultural affairs roles within the BJP
Constitutional Offices Held
Governor of Bihar — October 2017 to August 2018 (also additional charge as Governor of Odisha from March to May 2018)
Governor of Jammu & Kashmir (its last Governor before reorganization) — August 2018 to October 2019. It was during this tenure that Article 370 was abrogated on 5 August 2019, and the state was reorganized into two Union Territories
Afterwards, he served as Governor of Goa (Nov 2019 – Aug 2020) and then Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022

Reactions
Countries across the political spectrum expressed condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed grief over Malik’s demise. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge recalled him as a “farmer‑friendly” leader

Legacy and Later Years
Malik was known for being outspoken, especially in his later years: he criticized alleged security lapses around the 2019 Pulwama terror attack and expressed concerns over corruption linked to a hydropower project in Jammu & Kashmir
In 2023, the CBI filed a chargesheet naming him in the alleged Kishtwar hydel project corruption case, based on allegations he had earlier flagged. He had initially been examined as a witness prior to being named in the case
