
A kingdom in northern India called Amareshwar was ruled by King Raghuvanshi. He was famous far and wide for his justice, valour and piety. The people worshipped him like a god. But as popular as he was, he had as many enemies – especially in the court.
The king’s commander Veerbhanu, who was once his friend, was now blinded by the lust for power. He felt that the king’s generosity was weakening the kingdom. Gradually Veerbhanu started creating divisions among the king’s ministers and even tried to bring the queen under suspicion.

One day, King Raghuvanshi received a tip-off that a conspiracy was being hatched against him. He called Veerbhanu and asked him directly. Veerbhanu flatly denied it – but the expression on his face spoke volumes.

The king thought that he would not take any strict action until he got proof of betrayal, so he stopped the matter. But Veerbhanu was not going to stop. That very night, when the king was praying in his private temple, some soldiers attacked him from hiding.

Though King Raghuvanshi was a great warrior, being unarmed and alone, he was injured. He was eventually killed by a poisoned dagger.

Uncovering the Truth
The king’s murder was declared a suicide. But Queen Viraja Devi suspected the truth. She sent spies in secret and in a few weeks everything was revealed – Veerbhanu’s secret meetings, signs of rebellion in the army, and a secret diary containing details of the king’s murder.

victory of justice
The queen called the court and put Veerbhanu in the dock with evidence. As per justice, Veerbhanu was given the death penalty. This sentence is written on the tomb of King Raghuvanshi even today:
